A lawsuit against the university will be filed by a man who was apprehended after an alleged attempted burglary and then hit by a Drexel police car on campus.
Drexel’s Office of University Communications issued late last month that the university was contacted by the attorney who informed them of his client’s plan to file the lawsuit in relation to his pursuit and arrest during an incident which happened in December, 2011.
According to the statement given by Drexel University, a man who was apprehended during an attempted burglary on campus was struck by the campus police car as he was attempting to flee from police.
The attorney for a man who was stopped by police after an alleged attempted burglary and then hit by a Drexel police car on campus told the University of the to a lawsuit on behalf of his client against the university.
Surveillance video captured the whole incident which happened last December 30, 2011. In the video, a man can be seen running away after being stopped by Drexel Police, who was looking for a suspect in an attempted burglary.
Next scene showed the 43-year-old Walter Johnson being hit and then pinned up against a wall by a Drexel University Police vehicle.
Moments later, the car pulled back and Johnson fell to the ground.
Johnson’s attorney stated that his client suffered a broken leg and a shattered pelvis – injuries that kept him in a wheelchair for nearly nine months.
Before the collision happened, a video showed Johnson and another man trying to get through the locked doors of several university buildings.
The university stated that the man who was apprehended during an attempted burglary on campus was the same man struck by a campus police car as he was attempting to flee from police. The university mentioned that police officer immediately called an ambulance and the suspect was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Johnson’s attorney said that his client at that time just wanted to use the bathroom and that it was nothing illegal.
Johnson, who has a criminal record, wasn’t supposed to be there and should have been in a halfway house as a part of his probation in a prior case. After conducting the investigation, the district attorney’s office withdrew charges.
The man accused in the burglary disputed he was committing any crime. Charges against him were later withdrawn.
